Gran Canaria – climate, location, flight

The decision about spending holidays in Gran Canaria resulted from the fact that I wanted everything at once: both the mountains and the sea, good weather, climate and exoticism, a lot of attractions and all of this for a reasonable price. As it turned out, it was one of the best „holiday” decisions.

Gran Canaria is a place that captivated me and every time I watch the pictures, I would like to go back there as soon as possible.

If you are going there in the near future, or you cannot decide whether you should go there or not, I recommend you to get to know the island a little closer. It would be a pity to fly to the island and miss what it has to offer just because of our ignorance, or even worse, not to go there at all with the conviction that there is nothing to see.

A TOUCH OF  GEOGRAPHY – GRAN CANARIA LOCATION

Gran Canaria is the third largest island in the archipelago of the Canary Islands. Although they belong to Spain, geographically it lies a stone’s throw from the north-west coast of Africa. It is no wonder that it is always warm there.

Why is Gran Canaria so special ? Because it is a continent in miniature. The island has a circular shape , and its central part is dominated by amazing mountains of volcanic origin. The result is that the deeper into the inland, the higher, the more oceanic winds mingle with mountain climate, creating so many climate zones, that it seems to us that a few steps take us to a completely different continent. In the coastal zone, especially in the south of the island it is completely dry. The whole green vegetation which grows there, owes its existence only to an incredibly extensive network of sprinklers. If it did not exist there, this part of the island would resemble a desert, and only the ocean would slightly disturb the African landscape.

A trip to the central part of the island – in the vicinity of the crater – takes us to a completely different place. For a moment I felt like I moved to our Polish mountains in a strange way. The humid European climate, a lot of green spaces – a nice interlude after a few days of dry wind. But not all mountain ranges have been endowed by nature with vegetation. Driving tortuous roads from Teroru to Maspalomas you can enjoy a view of truly ” American ” canyons and powerful red mountains.

TRIP TO GRAN CANARIA

I decided to take a trip to Gran Canaria with a travel agency and it seems to me that for a week’s stay there it is not a bad decision. As Gran Canaria is an island situated in close proximity to Africa, the most convenient and fastest way to get there is a taking a plane (the trip takes about 6 hours). Travel agencies offer charter flights, so the whole trip (accommodation, breakfast and dinner) may cost only a little more than an airline ticket bought alone, and in addition it is a direct flight. When buying tickets on your own you must reckon with the fact that a connecting flight and a long wait at the airport for the second flight are ahead of you.

LANDING

The flight passed in an atmosphere of excitement and expectation, which turned into a slight uneasiness when the plane began to taxi above the island. Why? Because I thought that through an airplane window I’d catch a glimpse of some juicy colors of Gran Canaria sinking in the sunshine. Meanwhile, I saw a dun-colored, rocky island that was far from my imagination. The travel from the airport to the hotel in Meloneras also initially did not arouse admiration, only beautiful sun did not allow me to worry too much about the environment.

However the closer we were to Maspalomas, the more green spaces, flowers and palm trees there were, which created a climate which I expected.

GOOD TO KNOW

Perhaps the information that the island enjoys a huge popularity among same-sex couples may be important to some of you. Their favorite place for sunbathing is around the dunes of Maspalomas, where nudists sunbathe too. They willingly spend the evenings, on the other hand, in the Yumbo gallery – it is an ordinary shopping mall during the day, while in the evening it turns into a place of events. Drag queens wearing exorbitantly high heels encourage visitors to come into the premises. Every year in May in Gran Canaria the Gay Pride takes place.
